Nine killed as Edo sand-laden truck rams into passenger buses

Residents of Sokponba Road, Benin City, Edo State, were thrown into mourning on Tuesday as an early morning accident reportedly claimed the lives of nine persons.

Drops.ng Metro gathered from a source that the accident occurred at Ogbelaka Junction, where a tipper, loaded with sand, collided with two buses conveying passengers.

The source stated that the casualties would have been more if the Bureau de Change operators by Erie Junction did not run for safety when vehicles that were trying to avoid the scene tried to crush them.

According to eyewitnesses, the tipper involved in the accident was trying to overtake another tipper, but lost control and collided with the two minibuses, killing the commuters on the spot.

The accident caused a traffic jam, as the exit routes to Asoro Street, Eri and Ogbelaka were blocked, leaving commuters to trek long distances to their destinations.

He said, “It involved a truck coming from Upper Sakponba that lost control WHILE RACING WITH ANOTHER TRUCK and ran into a white commercial bus, killing three people on the spot, while one died on the way to the hospital. The injured victims have been rushed to a hospital for treatment.”
