The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it will only recognize the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election results declared at the venue approved by the party’s national leadership.
This was disclosed by the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Johnson Alalibo Onuoha, while speaking to journalists on Monday. He said that following the Supreme Court ruling, monitoring of party primaries is the responsibility of the parties themselves.
“The national body of the parties will write to INEC national chairman on the venue, date and time of the primary, and we have followed that strictly,” Onuoha said.
He revealed that INEC monitored the APC primary held at Lushville Hotel in Benin City, having being officially notified by the party’s national leadership. “Any political party primaries that was not minuted to us by our headquarters, we will not monitor,” he affirmed.
Onuoha also warned aspirants and political parties to stop campaigning for the governorship election immediately or face sanctions. He reiterated that official campaigning can only commence on April 24, as stipulated by INEC.
