The fallout from the mass resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee has triggered a complete systemic reset process as the NFF has officially canceled its upcoming September 27 Elective Congress.
The interim management of the football governing body subsequently disbanded the Electoral Committee, and announced plans for a FIFA-backed Normalization Committee following direct intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In an official letter dated August 28, 2026, the Acting General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, formally directed the temporary NFF Electoral Committee to stand down. While praising the committee for their diligence and sacrifice in attempting to midwife the now-aborted elections, Ikpeme confirmed that all previously scheduled electoral processes have come to an immediate halt.
A Presidential Mandate for Grassroots Reform :
The sweeping changes are the direct result of a mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has ordered structural and institutional reforms to rescue the nation’s football ecosystem.
According to the official communication, the existing Congress of Nigeria Football has been effectively dissolved. Instead of proceeding with a top-level national election, the presidential directive mandates that the rebuilding process must start from the ground up. Future electoral processes will only commence after deep-rooted structural reforms, starting at the Local Council level.
FIFA Normalization Committee Looms
With the Gusau-led board completely out of the picture, an interim administration is currently managing the day-to-day affairs at the NFF Secretariat in Abuja. However, this is strictly a stopgap measure.
Dr. Ikpeme confirmed that the NFF is preparing to formally engage with the world football-governing body, FIFA, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the coming days. These consultations will lead to the installation of a Normalization Committee —a standard FIFA intervention mechanism used to stabilize crisis-hit federations, rewrite statutes, and organize fresh, transparent elections.
The letter to the Electoral Committee serves as the final nail in the coffin for the old regime’s timeline.
“The resignations of the President, General Secretary, and entire Executive Committee of the NFF… had an impact of seismic proportions on Nigeria Football’s ecosystem,” Dr. Ikpeme stated in the letter. “The departures have paved the way for structural and other forms of reforms… This means that even the Congress of Nigeria Football is no longer standing.”
With the September elections officially scrapped, Nigerian football enters a critical transition phase. Fans and stakeholders will now look to the incoming Normalization Committee to lay down a new, sustainable foundation for the sport.
