While attending the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, this weekend, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade officially initiated high-level discussions with World Athletics officials regarding Nigeria’s strong interest in hosting the 2030 World Athletics U20 Championship.
The strategic meeting centred on Nigeria’s ambition to bring the global athletics community to its shores and firmly establish the nation as a premier destination for international sporting events.
During the engagement, Hon. Olopade made a compelling case for Nigeria’s capacity to deliver a spectacular tournament, highlighting several key areas:
Infrastructural Readiness : Reaffirming the country’s commitment to providing top-tier sporting facilities and meeting the highest global organizational standards.
Warm Hospitality : Promising an excellent and welcoming atmosphere for athletes, officials, and fans from across the globe.
Continuous Investment : Noting that Nigeria’s growing financial and structural investments in athlete development and event management have perfectly positioned the country for greater responsibilities on the world stage.
To solidify the credibility of Nigeria’s bid, the DG pointed to the flawless execution of the 2025 CAA Africa U20/U18 Athletics Championships. Stepping in at very short notice in July 2025, Nigeria successfully hosted the continental showpiece in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The event saw the country seamlessly welcome delegations from over 40 African nations, accommodating nearly 1,000 athletes, officials, and participants.
According to Olopade, the success in Abeokuta stands as undeniable proof of Nigeria’s logistical capacity, passion for athletics, and organizational efficiency, laying a rock-solid foundation for the 2030 global showpiece.
This proactive engagement in Budapest aligns seamlessly with the NSC’s broader mandate to strengthen Nigeria’s relationships with international sports governing bodies and reposition the nation as a powerhouse in global sports administration and hosting.
