Osayomore Joseph Music Career
He began his musical career as a member of the Nigerian army officers mess band when he was 19 years old. He honed his flute and guitar talents while in the band. In 1976, Osayomore Joseph branched out and began publishing his own music, inspired by Sir Victor Uwaifo, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and King Sunny Ade.
He returned to Benin to pursue his career, which was gaining traction among Edo people in Benin, after releasing many albums between 1976 and 1979.
He combined contemporary popular music — funk, Afrobeat, and highlife — with Edo’s traditional songs and rhythms, drawing on his musical background.
His funky, percussion-heavy beats won him followers all over Nigeria, as well as in the increasing Edo populations in the United States and Europe.
In the early 1980s, Osayomore had a string of regional singles, including “Efewedo,” “Ororo No Dey Fade,” and “Soja Go Soja Come,” all of which included this sound.
Between 1980 and 1985, Osayomore returned to Benin and gained success with a string of fan-favorite tunes. Nigeria was transitioning towards a protracted period of military dictatorship at the time of this success. People’s social and economic life were disrupted by tough austerity measures and political upheaval to the point where even an artiste like Osayomore began to utilize his music to comment on the situation.
In the early 1990s, Osayomore responded to the political climate with a series of critical songs, including “Truth” and “Teacher.” Osayomore had always kept his criticism mostly oblique until Babangida annulled the results of the democratic election of June 12, 1992, which should have brought popular candidate M.K.O. Abiola to office. However, with his album, June 12 Is God’s Mandate, he made a bold stance. “Baba Na Wa” is the title of his song. Babangida is described as “evil,” the “original criminal,” and the “father of all calamities” by Osayomore.
His forthright denunciations of corruption and injustice in songs like “Son of a Thief,” “Army of Freedom,” and, especially, “Baba Na Wa,” earned him the Edo people’s long-term loyalty and love, and inspired a long line of Edo State activist-musicians.
