The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State chapter has debunked reports that the candidature of its candidate in the September 21, 2024 governorship election, Dr Asue Ighodalo, has been nullified by court.
Recall that Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday nullified the PDP’s primary election that produced Ighodalo as the party’s governorship candidate.
It had been reported that the court invalidated the primary election on the ground that 378 delegates who were supposed to vote at the primary election were unlawfully excluded by the PDP.
Justice Ekwo reportedly voided the PDP’s February 22 primary election while delivering judgment in a suit marked THC/ABJ/CS/165/2024 instituted by the aggrieved delegates, Mr. Kelvin Mohammed in a representative capacity.
Justice Ekwo held that both the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the PDP guidelines were grossly violated in the conduct of the primary election.
But reacting to the report, the Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, in a short statement said that the candidature of Ighodalo as the flag bearer of the party remained intact as the judgment of the Federal High court did not in any way affect his candidature.
Aziegbemi said, “The Peoples Democratic Party is aware that certain elements who are scared of the soaring popularity of our candidate Dr Asue Ighodalo are going about peddling rumors that the candidature of Dr Asue Ighodalo has been nullified.
“Let it be on record that the candidature of Dr Asue Ighodalo as the flag bearer of the party for the 2024 elections remains intact and that the judgment of the Federal High court in Abuja did not in any way affect the candidature of Dr Asue Ighodalo.
“We urge our teaming loyal supporters to remain calm and resolute as there is no cause for alarm.”
