BENIN CITY – Political parties in Edo State are set to begin their primaries following the release of the timetable for the July 11, 2026, local government election by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
According to the EDSIEC Chairman, Mr. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, party primaries and the resolution of disputes arising from them will hold between November 10 and 29, 2025.
He had said that the process will pave the way for the nomination of candidates to contest the council polls across the 18 local government areas.
Aifuobhokhan assured that the Commission is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and credible election, urging political parties to adhere strictly to the schedule and guidelines that will be issued at a meeting with stakeholders earlier scheduled for November 3, 2025, but has been postponed to a later date through a letter he personally signed
The publication of the final list of candidates is slated for February 9, 2026, while campaigns will run from February 11 to July 9, 2026.
