BENIN CITY – The Amirul Hajj for Edo State’s 2026 pilgrimage, HRH Mallam Ali D. Suleyman, has said that the state government’s sustained commitment to pilgrims’ welfare and proactive interventions in Hajj operations have positioned Edo for a more seamless and successful exercise.

Mallam Ali D. Suleyman, who doubles as the Oghieaga of Ivbie, commended the government for what he described as unprecedented support during the 2025 Hajj, noting that its responsiveness and timely interventions significantly improved the overall experience of Edo pilgrims.

Speaking while presenting the report of the 2025 Hajj exercise to the government, the royal father acknowledged that although some challenges were encountered, many predated the current administration and were effectively mitigated through swift government action.

“Despite the challenges we met on ground, the Edo State Government was very generous and responsive. Virtually everything required for the exercise was provided, and whenever issues arose, we reached out and government responded promptly,” he said.

He particularly lauded the government for providing transportation for returning pilgrims from Lagos to Benin, describing it as a landmark intervention.

“For the first time, buses were provided to convey pilgrims from Lagos back to Benin immediately on arrival. This was a major relief that brought comfort and dignity to our people,” he added.

He also praised interventions in feeding arrangements and general welfare support, which he said contributed to a largely successful outing.

While noting minor logistical gaps, including transportation challenges within Saudi Arabia and early payment issues, he said the government had already taken steps to address them ahead of the 2026 Hajj.

According to him, Governor Monday Okpebholo has demonstrated strong political will by assuring prompt approvals and early release of funds to ensure adequate preparation.

“The governor has made it clear that whatever is required for a successful Hajj will be provided. This commitment to early planning will eliminate past challenges,” he said.

He disclosed that the state is working closely with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to ensure hitch-free departure and return of pilgrims, while strengthening logistics and medical support in Saudi Arabia.

On his reappointment, Suleyman attributed it to the governor’s confidence in continuity and effective leadership, noting that the administration’s openness to ideas has created an enabling environment for improved performance.
Looking ahead, he assured that the 2026 Hajj would feature enhanced welfare packages, including better accommodation with reduced congestion, more affordable services and sustained quality feeding.

He commended the 2025 medical team for exceptional performance and expressed confidence that standards would be maintained or improved.

The Amirul Hajj urged intending pilgrims to adhere to medical screening guidelines, make early payments, and prepare physically and spiritually.

He also encouraged those who missed the 2025 exercise to remain optimistic, noting that improved planning would create more opportunities in future operations.

Suleyman expressed confidence that with continued government support, the 2026 Hajj would rank among the most successful in Edo State’s history.
