The Edo State Government has announced that Hon. Justice Mary Nekpen Asemota, the newly appointed Acting President of the Edo State Customary Court of Appeal, will be sworn into office on Monday, June 8, 2026.

This was contained in a government special announcement issued on June 5 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq.

The swearing-in ceremony, according to the statement, will be performed by Governor Monday Okpebholo at 9:00 a.m. at the Governor’s Office, Government House, Benin City.

Justice Asemota was recently appointed Acting President of the Edo State Customary Court of Appeal by Governor Okpebholo in line with Section 55(1) of the Customary Court of Appeal (Re-establishment) Law of Edo State, 2025, which empowers the governor to appoint, in acting capacity, the most senior judge of the defunct Customary Court of Appeal still serving in the Edo State Judiciary, pending the recommendation of a substantive president and judges of the court by the National Judicial Council.
