Running a small business in Benin City is not always about doing just one thing.
With the cost of running a business constantly changing, some business owners are finding other ways to make money using the skills and resources they already have. Instead of relying on one service or product, they are adding new ones to keep their businesses moving.
We spoke to four business owners in Benin City about the other things they do to keep their businesses afloat.

Blessing, Nail Tech
I don’t only do nails. I also make hair and sell press-on nails.
Another way I make money is by teaching people the skill. Some people want to learn how to do nails themselves, so they pay me to teach them.
I think having different things I do helps because I’m not depending on just customers who want to fix their nails. Someone can buy press-on nails, someone can book me to make their hair, and someone else can pay to learn the skill.
Daniel, Cybercafé Owner
I do JAMB and NECO registrations and other services for students. I also help university students with their projects. Apart from that, I do graphic design.
So it’s not just about people coming to use the cybercafé. There are different things people can come to me for, especially students. If someone needs a registration, a project done or graphic design, I can provide those services.
Sandra, Hair Stylist
I’m a hairstylist, but I also sell wigs. I also make money from teaching people how to style wigs. Some people don’t necessarily want to pay someone to style their wig every time. They would rather learn how to do it themselves, so I teach them.
Selling wigs also gives me another source of income apart from styling people’s hair. So I’m able to make money from both the service and the products.
Agnes, POS Business
I sell perfume oils. I added perfume oils because sales from the POS business can be small. Everywhere you look now, people are doing POS, so the competition is a lot.
So apart from POS, I sell perfume oils to support myself. It gives me something else to make money from instead of depending only on POS transactions.
The businesses may be different, but the idea is the same: in other to thrive, you need more than one funnel to make money and it can come with creative diversification.
