2026 came and, as usual, everybody had plans.
New year, new goals, new resolutions.
This year, we were going to lose weight, save money, learn a new skill, get a better job, start that business, read more books and generally become the best version of ourselves.
Now, here we are in September. The ninth month of the year and, if we’re being honest, some of us haven’t achieved half of what we wrote down in January. Some of us haven’t even opened the notebook where we wrote the goals but before you start sitting down on December 31st asking yourself, “God, what have I done with my life?”, calm down.
You still have time. No, you probably can’t achieve every single thing on that January list. But you can re-strategise, pick a few realistic goals and make some progress before the year ends.
So, let’s help you out.
1. Save Some Money

If your January goal was to save ₦2 million, ₦1 million or even ₦10 million for December, and your savings account is currently empty and laughing at you whenever you open it, perhaps it’s time to reduce the target.
Start with something realistic.
How about ₦100,000?
From September to November, that’s roughly ₦33,000 a month. It may not be the amount you imagined yourself saving in January, but it’s still money you didn’t have before and ₦100,000 can do something for you. It can cover a few December expenses, buy a new pair of jeans from Ring Road Market, get you some attachments for your hair or simply give you breathing room when December spending begins.
2. Learn That Skill You’ve Been Shouting About Since January
“I want to learn Canva, Photoshop, video editing and coding.”
You’ve been shouting this since January, and somehow it is September and you’re still researching which course to take.
We have caught you. You don’t need to learn 17 things before December. Pick one.
If money is the problem, YouTube is sitting right there. There are thousands of free tutorials waiting for you. Give yourself three months to learn the basics, practise and actually create something with the skill.
You may not become an expert by December, but you can go from “I want to learn this” to “I can actually do this and please, stop collecting courses like Pokémon. Finish one first.
3. Work on That December Body

The summer body has left the group chat. We are now looking at a December body. If losing weight was one of your January goals and you’ve spent the last eight months promising yourself that you’ll “start next week,” congratulations. This is your next week.
You don’t have to suddenly become a gym rat. If the gym is too far from your house, walk around your area for 30 minutes. Exercise at home. Drink more water. Be more intentional about what you eat and your portions.
You don’t need to starve yourself because December is coming. You just need to start building healthier habits and yes, you can still have your parfait occasionally.
4. Upgrade Your CV and Apply More
Maybe you’ve already updated your CV. Maybe you’ve refreshed your LinkedIn profile. Maybe you’ve even applied for jobs and received enough rejection emails to recognise the company’s automated response.
Don’t stop. Use these remaining months to strengthen your CV, improve your skills and apply consistently for roles that actually fit you.
Set a weekly target. Apply for five suitable positions. Reach out to people in your industry. Improve your portfolio. Practise your interview skills.
You may not get the job immediately, but you’re giving yourself more chances than sitting at home waiting for LinkedIn to personally deliver your dream career.
5. Stop Postponing Everything
This might be the hardest one. There is probably something you’ve been saying you’ll do “later” since January.
Just Do it. Renew the document. Fix the broken appliance. Clean your room. Register for the course. Make the appointment. Whatever it is, stop moving it to tomorrow.
Give yourself small rewards along the way, too. If you’ve walked consistently for three weeks, treat yourself to that parfait. If you’ve completed your first course, buy yourself something nice.
At the end of the day, you don’t have to achieve everything you planned in January. Life happened. Things changed. Maybe you didn’t have the money, time or energy you thought you would but trying is still better than doing nothing.
So, before you officially write off 2026, pick a few goals, make them realistic and start and if December comes and, after all this, you still haven’t achieved anything?
Well, we’ve tried our best and there is nothing else we can do for you.
